Artist Statement
Everything has a voice, whether we listen or not depends on how much we want to learn. My work comes from a need to learn, to connect with my surroundings and my history. In my grandfather's apartment, a suitcase filled with photos, letters and documents led to my most recent work, paintings based on the photos that my grandfather, Antonio Gines took as a young man. The photos allow me to tap into a memory he no longer has and connect to a history of migration, military service and relationships that he never thought to share. The art I create whether it is a painting or a poem, is created in order to help me internalize what the world has to teach me, it is meant to begin the conversation about what is the same, what has changed and how much we still need to learn.
