Artist Statement
I started my career as an artist at 16 when I was commissioned by the fitness franchise “Body by Jakes” to design and paint a mural. Through scholarships provided by the Corcoran School of Arts I began my academic artistic training while in the 11th grade. I have managed my own career as an artist, handling every financial aspect and tapping into the many sources of income provided to artists.
I have taught fine arts classes at Wilson High School, Deal Middle School, the Art and Media House and conducted workshops at Bell Multicultural High School. I have created art for private individuals as well as public institutions, such as Neighbors Consejo, DC commissions of the Arts, the Latin American Youth Center, the Columbia Height Metro Station, Brookland CUA Metro station, the New Convention Center in DC, and Taft Junior High School.
I’m now employed by the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center. I oversee the Visitors Services department, scheduling staff, balancing the budget and insuring quality services to visitors. I’m also the Exhibits Associate, I am in charge of designing and installing our permanent and donated exhibits, selecting items for display, arranging the artifacts, and creating signage. Thus my career has given me a wide ranging experience of the art world.
